Master the Dark Art of Lobbying!

My new book Mastering the Dark Art of Lobbying1 is at last available.
Experienced lobbyists will check this book out and say “duh”.
It isn’t written for them – it’s for you.
This is a book for individuals, businesses, and community organisations who want something from government, and need a bit of advice about how to go get it.
Everyone wants something, even if they don’t own up to it, talk about it, or think often about it.
World peace …
A kid’s playground …
The contract to supply the Tasmanian Government with surgical gloves …
An end to fossil fuel reliance …
A smarter national energy policy …
Many of the things we want are in the hands of a government, and I’ve tried to write Mastering the Dark Art of Lobbying to show how to go get it. I’ve drawn on my decades of experience in government, policy and advocacy, so this book can make the process less of a mystery and make it easier to get what you want, while staying true to your values.
This book demystifies lobbying, and provides community organisations, business owners, and employees, with the tools and strategies needed to effectively press government to meet their needs. Lobbying shouldn’t be just about chatting with politicians or sending off a letter—it’s a deliberate, well-thought-out process. Effective lobbying is built on at least a little preparation, and Mastering the Dark Art of Lobbying sets out the basics.
It takes you through what’s involved in lobbying and what is not, why and how you develop a lobbying strategy, who you talk with, how you get to meet them, what you say when you’re in the room, and how to shape what you’re asking for so that it’s both possible and appealing. Case studies and anecdotes are based on my observation of real-life lobbying, and a lobbying checklist helps ensure you’ve got everything covered.
I’ve tried to ensure Mastering the Dark Art of Lobbying is written in accessible language and focussed on practical suggestions, and that it doesn’t drown anyone in the minutiae of how government works. My intent is that it delivers concrete, usable, guidance and tools.
It also explains why and how lobbying in Australia is very different from other countries, particularly the US, and some of the legal framework applying in Australia.
You’ll find it here https://ethicalconsulting.com/book/ and via bookshops/e-book retailers imminently.
I would love to hear your thoughts!
- My tongue is in my cheek – it isn’t a Dark Art, just relatively unknown. ↩︎

If i could, i would not put it down …
Thanks! I hope all is good in that cold, wet place you call home!
